Description

The Benefits of IBCLC Lactation Consultation

Hi, I’m Joanna , mum of three, twice a cancer survivor, and founder of Singapore Lactation Bakes. I’m also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and it’s my heart to walk alongside mums in this deeply personal journey of breastfeeding.

At SLB, we’ve always believed in real support. Our lactation consultation services are just one more way we show up for you with care, empathy, and evidence based help that meets you right where you are.

Start with Community, Not Pressure

Not sure if you need a consult yet? Totally okay.

You’re warmly invited to join our free Telegram group “SLBFam” for mums. A gentle space for mums to ask questions, share what’s worked, and lean on each other without judgement. Sometimes, just knowing you’re not alone makes all the difference.

But if things feel a bit more complicated or you just want 1 to 1 support,  that’s where I come in.

Why Book a Lactation Consult?

Whether you’re preparing to breastfeed, currently latching, or figuring out how to pump at work, you don’t have to do this alone.

As an IBCLC, I support mums through:

• Baby refusing to latch or falling asleep mid-feed
• Concerns about milk supply (too little, too much, or just unsure)
• Nipple or breast pain, posture issues
• Latch struggles or confusing feeding cues
• Pumping problems or prepping to return to work
• Engorgement, blocked ducts, or signs of mastitis
• Slow baby weight gain
• Weaning guidance or planning for the next stage
• Emotional overwhelm or breastfeeding guilt (yes, it’s real)

I also offer gentle, lactation informed breast massage for blocked ducts and engorgement grounded in clinical understanding, not just tradition.

What’s an IBCLC, Anyway?

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. it’s the gold standard in lactation care.

We’re trained in both the science and the emotional reality of breastfeeding. Every IBCLC must:

• Complete specialised training in lactation
• Clock hundreds of clinical hours before qualifying
• Pass a global exam (it’s no joke)
• Recertify regularly to stay current
• Follow a strict code of ethics and professional standards

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Some journeys are smooth, others feel like uphill climbs. But every mum deserves support that’s kind, empowering, and real. Join SLBFam to start with community. And if you’re ready for something deeper, I’d be honoured to support you through a private consultation weather its online or in person.

Let’s take this one step at a time together.

What Happens During a Consultation?

Every mum and baby is different, so no two consults are exactly the same. But here’s what you can generally expect with estimated time frames to give you a sense of how our session may flow:

For Baby:
• Observation of a full latch session which includes positioning, suck-swallow rhythm, baby’s cues (~30–45 mins)
• Gentle oral function assessment which includes tongue movement, jaw strength, suck quality (~15–30 mins)
• Feeding pattern review which includes duration, frequency, weight gain (~15 mins)

For You:
• Personalised support for latching, positioning, milk supply, pumping, or any other concerns (~30–45 mins)
• Flange fitting (if pumping) and review of pump usage (~20–45 mins)
• Relief strategies for engorgement, blocked ducts, or nipple pain (~15 mins)
• Weaning guidance or return to work planning, if needed (~30–45 mins)

Plus:
• Emotional support and encouragement because you matter too
• Practical tips tailored to your family’s rhythm and baby’s age
• WhatsApp follow-up support after the consult (you’re not left to figure it out alone)

For home visits, I’ll bring everything needed no prep required. Just get comfy, and we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you and your baby.

Take the first step toward informed, compassionate breastfeeding support.
